Mike Alpert
Executive Director
Mike Alpert has been the President/CEO of The Claremont Club for the past 16 years. Claremont is near and dear to Mike’s heart as that is where he met his beautiful wife, Annie and where their talented daughter Justene attended school. Together they enjoy traveling, Dodger baseball, being at the beach and spending time with their family and friends. During his time at The Claremont Club he has created a dedicated team of leaders who take pride in their work and know the importance of team.  All have a true sense of ownership and accountability. Mike has developed a club culture of passion and created a focus on making a difference in people’s lives.

He has helped the community by creating outreach services, including:
  • Annual summer camp scholarships to 100 – 130 financially disadvantaged children
  • The Living Well after Cancer program with Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center with over 550 women and their families benefiting from this free program
  • Developed the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) program with the Be Perfect Foundation and in February of 2013 opened the first Project Walk Franchise in the world at The Claremont Club
  • Created the Adopt-a-Family program that adopts 10 – 14 families during the Christmas season and supplies personal and living needs
  • Developed partnerships with the Anaheim Angel Baseball organization and the Ontario Reign Hockey organization to assist financially disadvantaged children in school districts as far away as Duarte
Mike has served on the Northwest Athletic Club Association Board of Directors

Denise Johnson
Facility Director

Denise is the Wellness Director at The Claremont Club. Prior to coming to the Club in 1997, Denise earned her Masters of Science degree in Exercise Physiology from West Chester University. Having worked in the Health and Fitness Industry for over 25 years, Denise understands the value and importance of exercise and healthy living. Denise has 2 children, Noelle, who plays competitive volleyball, and Cole, who is a baseball fanatic. Her husband Scott shares in the passion for health and fitness and loves the Philadelphia Eagles and watching Monday night football. Denise has had the opportunity to acquire many distinguishing certifications over the years including her ACSM Health and Fitness Instructor, NSCA-CPT, TRX, HKC Kettlebell, Rope Certified, as well as being a Medic/First Aid CPR/AED certificate holder. The addition of Project Walk Claremont has inspired Denise more than anything else she has done in the last 25 years of working in the fitness industry. She believes that she has finally found her calling and looks forward to coming to work each day.

Juana Rodriguez
Administrative Assistant
Juana has been part of The Claremont Club family since 2003. She started working as a receptionist in the Ambiance Day Spa and Salon. Her passion for customer service and hard work gave her the opportunity to take a leadership role and work in different departments around the club. Juana has been recognized for her communication skills and having many responsibilities. Although she was happy with her former line of work, her true call came when she was given the opportunity to be part of the Project Walk team. Juana has had many personal situations that had help her understand how important it is to treat everyone with respect and kindness.
Tanya Slusser
Team Lead - Certified Recovery Specialist

Tanya Slusser received her Bachelor degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Clinical Exercise Science from Cal State Fullerton University in 2010. During her four years at CSUF she played for the Division 1 collegiate Women’s Soccer Team. She feels this experience truly helped shape her as an individual and gave her the discipline she needed to succeed later in life. After graduating, Tanya accepted a job at The Claremont Club where she started working in the weight room as well as in the spinal cord injury Studio. She absolutely loved working with the spinal cord injured population and couldn’t see herself doing anything different. Since obtaining her spinal cord injury certification at the headquarters in Carlsbad she has taken on the roll of Lead Specialist in Project Walk Claremont, Tanya truly feels blessed to be apart of something bigger than herself. Project Walk is her home away from home and she is grateful to be surrounded by exceptional people that humble her everyday.

Shawn Gutierrez
Certified Recovery Specialist
Shawn graduated with his Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from Cal Poly Pomona. He has been certified as a personal trainer through the NSCA since 2007. In 2010 he was hired on at the Claremont Club as a Master Trainer. In late 2012 he was fortunate enough to go to Project Walk Carlsbad and get certified in their methods of spinal cord injury recovery; He now works in the Claremont facility.  In his spare time he loves lifting weights, playing video games and taking Krav Maga classes. He tries to eat healthy but has a weak spot for burritos, In-N-Out and cheesecake! He also has a pet snake named Tang.
Jenna Hardy
Certified Recovery Specialist
Jenna earned her Bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology from California State University, Chico. While at Chico State, Jenna participated on the Chico Competition Cheer Team. She also worked on campus as a group exercise instructor and personal trainer. After graduating, Jenna moved down to San Diego where she used her degree to help run Motorola's Wellness Center. During this time, she also picked up a passion for endurance sports and completed multiple half marathons and triathlons. Uninspired with her job, Jenna headed up to Carlsbad where she worked as an aide at Project Walk Headquarters for three months. After learning that the first Project Walk franchise location was opening up in her hometown, Claremont, Jenna applied and accepted a specialist position at Project Walk Claremont. Jenna is an outgoing and active individual who has a passion for helping others reach their goals.
Kristen Johnson
Certified Recovery Specialist

Kristen graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Lifetime Fitness from Sonoma State University in 2012.  While she was a Kinesiology student, she participated in a program called Saturday Sidekicks where she assisted one-on-one with children who have special needs in order to build motor skills and self-esteem through participation in games, perceptual motor activities, and modified sports.  Kristen volunteered at Casa Colina Centers for Rehabilitation and St. Jude Medical Center during her summer breaks.  During her last semester at Sonoma State she was a teacher assistant/lab technician for an Exercise Physiology class.  Kristen has been a friend and supporter of the Spinal Cord Injury community as well as an advocate for the Be Perfect Foundation since 2007.

Loren Lockett
Certified Recovery Specialist
Loren Lockett received his Bachelor degree in Kinesiology at the University of La Verne in 2013. He was currently working at Project Walk - Claremont as an aide since opening in February 2013. After completing his degree he decided there was no place he could see himself being happier than at Project Walk. Being able to watch our client’s progress while finding new and creative ways to help clients accomplish their goals is something he truly lives for. When not spending time with family or his four year old son (Lorenzo) he enjoys staying in shape by working out or playing softball, basketball, golf, tennis, racquetball or anything else he can get his hands on. Just one small part of an incredible group of specialists who all have the same goal….make Project Walk Claremont the best it can possibly be.
Nicole Pires
Certified Recovery Specialist
Nicole attended school at Cal State Monterey Bay where she received her degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Exercise Science. During her years at school she competed on the collegiate softball team. After graduation she accepted a position as an assistant coach for the softball program where she over saw the pitching and catching staff. Her goals of one day becoming a physical therapist suddenly changed when one of her best friends, Kody Peraita, was in an accident and suffered a spinal cord injury. Getting to accompany him to some of his sessions at Project Walk Carlsbad, she knew right away that this was what she wanted to do. The hard work and passion of the clients is what truly inspired her to pursue this career.
Skye Severns
Certified Recovery Specialist
Skye Severns received his Bachelor degree in Exercise and Sport Science from St. Marys University in San Antonio, Texas. During his years in school he played collegiate baseball. In 2012 Skye spent a year on the coaching staff at St. Mary’s where he acted as the team’s assistant pitching and strength coach. After his time in Texas, Skye moved home to Claremont and now finds himself at Project Walk. Skye is very enthused to be part of the Project Walk family. He considers himself lucky to be part of an amazing work place and great people.
